Dr. Keisha ButlerList Item 1
I am Dr. Keisha Butler, a General Dentist currently practicing in Brooklyn, New York. Throughout my career, my focus has been on providing access to quality dental care for disadvantaged and marginalized members of the community.
My hometown is New Orleans, LA… NOLA. I consider myself to be a free spirit, a dreamer, an optimist, easy going, and simply a lover of all things creative.
Before becoming Melanated Docs, Catrina and I were just two Melanated girls from the south trying to find our way. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a little hard work, perseverance, discipline, and determination. We would not be where we are today without the love and support of our friends and family.
Welcome to our lives! Here you will get our honest perspective on what it means to be a Doctor of Color.
We are your Melanated Docs. Take this journey with us!

Dr. Catrina JohnsonList Item 2
“She believed she could so she did. But it wasn’t easy”. I am Dr. Catrina Johnson a board-certified anesthesiologist practicing at a level one trauma center in Illinois. I was born in Natchez, MS and I am a proud graduate of an HBCU, Jackson State University. I transferred to Jackson State University from Tulane University after displacement secondary to Hurricane Katrina. I received a Bachelor of Science and continued to embark on my path towards medical school. I attended Creighton University School of Medicine and the University of Nebraska for anesthesia residency.
I am also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, American Society of Anesthesiologists, a mentor, and a leader within my community.
My path to medicine has not always been easy. During my first year of medical school, I lost my mother to heart disease. I also had to take on more roles within my family due to having a brother with special needs. Among others, my mother and brother, both have played an integral part in my pursuit of becoming a physician. Even though they were positive influences, I also faced my share of doubt, discouragement, and disappointment at the hands of colleagues, patients, and even those I considered allies.
This podcast will be a platform where Dr. Butler and I share our perspectives and experiences on our journeys to and throughout professional school. There will be open discussions to answer questions and offer advice. I know it’s cliché to say “To whom much is given, much is expected”, but I believe this sentiment whole heartedly. I want to impart the lessons and the wisdom that I learned on the way, because I am truly blessed to have realized my dream of becoming a physician. Unfortunately, as melanated individuals, we are often at a disadvantage. I want you and others to know that if I can achieve my goals so can you.
So listen in as Dr. Butler and I share our journeys as to how we became melanated docs!
